Tampere’s First SAE Level-4 Automated Bus Operations
Tampere, Finland is home to the country’s first and only SAE Level-4 automated bus operating on open public roads. The Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK, automated by ADASTEC, delivers a commercially available public transit service that marks a major milestone in the real-world application of automated driving technology within an active urban environment.
Running along a 10.5-kilometer (6.5-mile) route with 19 designated stops, the Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK navigates a variety of complex roadway scenarios, including roundabouts, signalized intersections, and pedestrian crossings. It operates at a maximum speed of 40 km/h (25 mph), delivering a consistent and safe experience for passengers within live city traffic.
The service utilizes ADASTEC’s flowride.ai software platform, an advanced automated driving system designed specifically for full-size buses in public transportation. The platform continuously processes real-time environmental and infrastructure data to support safe and precise decision-making on the road. flowride.ai ensures reliable performance in all weather conditions, including Finland’s snowy winters, maintaining smooth, uninterrupted service throughout the year.
Officially launched in May 2024, the service is fully approved by Traficom, Finland’s Transport and Communications Agency. This certification enables the Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK to legally transport paying passengers on open public roads, meeting all safety and regulatory requirements for public operations.
The deployment improves regional connectivity across Tampere, particularly benefiting underserved areas such as Haarula and Lamppala. By integrating with the city’s existing transportation system, the automated service expands access to consistent, inclusive, and sustainable mobility.
With its SAE Level-4 automation and fully software-defined capabilities, this deployment demonstrates how flowride.ai supports scalable, accessible, and intelligent public transportation in complex urban environments.
